Eoin Warner’s Through the Long Grass: Love\, Loss and Belonging in Nature (Gill Books) is a moving memoir that begins with loss but emerges as a powerful meditation on how the natural world reflects so much of our human story. Charting Eoin’s many vivid encounters with the natural world\, this book celebrates the gifts that nature gives us when everything else falls away – patience\, solace and a sense of belonging. Doyle is a journalist and presents ‘It Says in the Papers’ on Morning Ireland on RTÉ Radio 1. He was the founder editor of In Dublin\, the arts and current affairs magazine which flourished in the 1970s and 1980s and uncovered the talents of such writers as Colm Tóibín and Fintan O’Toole\, the photographers Tony O’Shea and Tony Murray\, and the cartoonist Tom Mathews. \nNaturalist Eoin Warner is an award-winning wildlife documentary presenter in both the Irish and English languages. He has presented some of Ireland’s foremost nature documentaries in recent years. His Irish-language documentaries include Éire Fhiáin (Wild Ireland)\, Iontais na bhFarraigí Ceilteacha (Wonders of the Celtic Deep) and Oileán Glas\, Fásach Bán (Green Island\, White Desert)\, a two-part series on the wildlife of the Burren. This collection of portrait-style photographs reveals the remarkable ‘personalities’ of Irish insects and offers a glimpse into the fascinating world of scientific research using these extraordinary creatures. In this session\, Lisa will detail the techniques she used to photograph many of the portraits\, as well as some of the interesting natural histories she learned about the subjects. The session will involve an interactive\, hands-on component. Attendees are welcome to bring their own equipment\, if they wish\, and try their hand at creating their own insect portraits. \nPlease note we may be capturing candid imagery at this event for use on our social media and website. \nLisa Clancy is an insect photographer and nature enthusiast based in Galway City. Her passion for the natural world began early and guided her academic journey\, starting with a BSc in Zoology from the University of Galway\, followed by an MSc in Biological Photography and Imaging from Nottingham University\, and culminating in a PhD in Insect Behaviour from Aberystwyth University in Wales in 2015. Exploring the wildlife\, folklore and medicinal properties of common wild flowers and trees\, Bridget Anna McNeill’s The Wild Within (Duckworth Books) is an immersive and enriching journey of recovery\, healing and rewilding\, one wild plant at a time. Dearbhla Mescal’s Finding Joy (Eriu) is a wise and heartfelt collection of poems\, musings and prompts encouraging readers to slow down and notice the ordinary joy and calm to be found in the world around us. Miriam Mulcahy’s Walking to the Foot of the Sky (Eriu) charts Miriam’s story of walking the Beara Breifne Way. What began as a desire to experience the beauty of nature became a lyrical and life-changing journey through Irish landscape\, history and renewal in the spaces where myth and memory linger. Her essays and teachings weave science\, story\, and soul\, with plants and wild places at their centre. She is the author of Bloom & Thrive: Essential Healing Herbs and Flowers and The Wild Within. She also writes the newsletter Into the Woods on Substack\, shares her work with nearly 75\,000 followers on Instagram @brigitannamcneill\, and has contributed to Resurgence & Ecologist\, The Green Parent\, and the BBC’s Countryfile. Alongside her writing\, she leads projects at the Sharpham Trust\, supporting people to reconnect with the land and themselves. She lives on Dartmoor with her three sons\, in a granite cottage surrounded by rivers\, moss\, and oak. \nHaving retired as a member of An Garda Sìochána\, reared her three children\, and experienced cancer\, Dearbhla Mescal is now finding the time to follow her own dreams and enjoy her second act of life. \nMiriam Mulcahy is a writer\, journalist and editor who contributes to The Irish Times. Her first book\, This is My Sea was a number one bestseller\, nominated for an Irish Book Award and was an Irish Times book of the year. From experimental fiction and magical realism to powerful stories of place\, identity\, history and contemporary Ireland\, Irish women writers have transformed the literary landscape at home and around the world. Tonight’s event\, featuring some of Ireland’s most exciting women writers in conversation with podcast host Róisín Ingle\, will celebrate where Irish women’s writing has come from\, and where it might go next. \nWriting in a Different Direction \nJan Carson\, Sue Rainsford and Sheila Armstrong are three distinctive voices pushing Irish fiction beyond the expected. Their work is imaginative\, unsettling and formally adventurous\, exploring the body\, nature\, identity\, place and the strange things that exist beneath the surface of everyday life. They join Róisín to discuss breaking conventions\, experimenting with form\, and imagining new possibilities for Irish fiction. \nBringing Ireland to the World \nAward-winning author Louise Kennedy‘s debut novel Trespasses was shortlisted for prizes including the Women’s Prize for Fiction\, and made into a limited TV series by Channel 4\, bringing her book to readers around the world. Louise joins Róisín for a conversation about the extraordinary international reach of contemporary Irish women’s writing. From Northern Ireland and the legacy of history to family\, relationships\, identity and social change\, Louise has created work rooted in Ireland that resonates with readers around the world. \n \nSheila Armstrong is a writer and editor from the north-west of Ireland. How to Gut a Fish\, her first collection of short stories\, was shortlisted for the Kate O’Brien Award and longlisted for the Edge Hill Prize. Falling Animals\, her debut novel\, was chosen for BBC2’s Between The Covers Book Club and shortlisted for the RSL Ondaatje Prize. \nJan Carson is a Belfast based writer who has published four novels\, three short story collections and two micro-fiction collections. Her novel The Fire Starters won the EU Prize for Literature for Ireland\, 2019. The Raptures was shortlisted for the An Post Irish Novel of the Year and Kerry Group Novel of the Year. Her writing has aired on BBC Radio 3 and 4 and RTE and has been translated into twenty languages worldwide. Jan was the Seamus Heaney Centre Fellow at Queen’s University Belfast in 2025 and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. She has also achieved the rank of Chevalier in the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France. Her first stage play\, an adaptation of the children’s classic\, The Velveteen Rabbit was produced by Replay Theatre Company at the Lyric Theatre\, Belfast in March 2025. Her latest novel\, Few and Far Between was published by Doubleday in April 2026. \nLouise Kennedy grew up a few miles from Belfast. She is the author of the acclaimed short-story collection\, The End of the World Is a Cul de Sac\, which won the John McGahern Prize. Her debut novel Trespasses\, published in 2022\, has been translated into over twenty languages. It won Eason Novel of the Year at the An Post Irish Book Awards\, Book of the Year: Debut Fiction at the British Book Awards and the McKitterick Prize\, and was also shortlisted for several awards including the Women’s Prize for Fiction\, the Waterstones Debut Fiction Prize and Barnes and Noble Discover Prize. In 2025\, Trespasses was made into a limited TV series by Channel 4\, starring Lola Petticrew\, Tom Cullen and Gillian Anderson. Before starting her writing career\, Kennedy spent nearly thirty years working as a chef. She lives in Sligo. \nSue Rainsford is an Irish fiction and art writer based in Dublin\, and author of the novels Follow Me To Ground (2018)\, Redder Days (2021) and From Out My Heart (2026). Her stories and novels have been nominated for the Republic of Consciousness Award\, the Desmond Elliott Prize\, the Prix Jean Monnet des Jeunes Européens\, the New York Radio Festival Awards\, the Desperate Literature Prize for Short Fiction\, and have received starred reviews from Kirkus Reviews and Publishers Weekly. Her short story\, ‘Shorn’\, was read by Saoirse Ronan on RTÉ Radio 1. \nRóisín Ingle is a columnist\, features writer and podcaster with The Irish Times. She is the author of two collections of her columns\, Pieces of Me and Public Displays of Emotion. Her debut EP\, Hungry Ghost (October 2024)\, is an eight-track avant-pop EP that explores consumption\, folklore and dreams\, and was created in collaboration with producer Rory Sweeney. Her music nods to artists such as Sinéad O’Connor\, Jenny Hval\, Jockstrap\, Astrid Sonne\, Róis\, Rachael Lavelle\, Tirzah\, Lankum and Bjork\, while establishing a distinctly Irish\, dark ethereal and otherworldly sonic identity of her own. More recently\, Pippa released a synth driven\, atmospheric cover of the Irish rebel song The Foggy Dew (March 2026\, feat. Rory Sweeney). The track marks her first release since Hungry Ghost and the beginning of a new body of work\, with new music set for release in late 2026 and into 2027. She has been featured by magazines such as Anois Os Aird\, Hot Press\, District Magazine\, The Thin Air and Fourth Best\, among others\, and has received radio play in Ireland and abroad. Louth where she still lives. She has published three full-length collections of poetry: For the Stranger (Dedalus Press\, 1993)\, Forest Music (Shearsman Books\, 2009) and Bridge of the Ford (Shearsman Books\, 2016). She was awarded the Patrick and Katherine Kavanagh Fellowship in Poetry in 2001. In the same year she received a Publications Grant from the Heritage Council of Ireland for A Salmon in the Pool\, a literary and place-names map of the river Boyne from source to sea. Her poems have been published in journals and online in Ireland\, the UK\, Canada and Australia and are included in The Field Day Anthology: vol IV\, Voices and Poetry of Ireland and Windharp: Poems of Ireland since 1916. Some of her work has been broadcast on The Poetry Programme on RTE Radio 1. Bridge of the Ford (2016)\, a collection of visual poetry\, is her tribute to Drogheda. Redfoxpress published What Noise on Earth in 2019 and in 2022 her artist’s book Looking Across the River. Her poetry was exhibited at the Museum of Literature Ireland\, Dublin in 2024 as part of the exhibition Is this a poem? She was awarded an Agility Award from the Arts Council of Ireland in 2024 to make POEM\, a handwritten poetry map of the river Boyne from Newgrange to the sea using texts from writers who in their poetry have celebrated the Boyne. POEM takes the form of a concertina book over 3 metres long. Her books have been displayed and sold at Dublin Art Book Fair and at Drogheda Zine Fair. \nMáighréad Medbh is a poet with nine published books and a reputation for compelling performance. Since her debut with Blackstaff Press in 1990\, she has performed widely in Ireland\, Europe\, the UK and US. Her poetic narrative of the Irish famine\, Tenant\, was initially published online and subsequently as a print book (Salmon\, 1999). She works mostly in long-form sequences or conceptual explorations\, and her ecological verse novel\, Parvit of Agelast (Arlen House\, 2016)\, was shortlisted for the 2017 Pigott Prize. Her four-part lyrical story for children\, The Rescue\, was first broadcast on Ireland’s Lyric FM in 2007\, set to music by Fergal Carroll. Other work includes transversions from Galician and Arabic\, collaboration on award-winning art films\, poems in several major anthologies and many journals\, three online novels\, and an essay-blog from 2012 to 2020. He has given lectures on Irish stained glass with particular emphasis on his forebears’ studio often combined with tours of their work. His stained glass publications have been in local county and church booklets\, in blogs for ‘Arts and Crafts Tours’\, and in the annual review ‘Glass Ireland’. Her first job was as an editor at The History Press in Gloucestershire\, and she has worked in both trade and academic publishing since. She currently sits on the EDI Committee for Publishing Ireland and is a member of Even UP\, a committee of UK and Irish university presses committed to EDI in their workplaces\, in who they work with\, and in what they publish. \nEimear Ryan is the author of a novel\, Holding Her Breath (Penguin Sandycove\, 2021)\, and a memoir\, The Grass Ceiling (Penguin Sandycove\, 2023). Her writing has appeared in Granta\, The Dublin Review\, The Stinging Fly\, Winter Papers\, Lit Hub\, and elsewhere. He founded YourShelf\, a bespoke book-subscription service\, in 2016. Over time\, YourShelf expanded to encompass the YourShelf Podcast\, where he interviewed a variety of writers from Lauren Groff to Doireann Ni Ghriofa\, as well as the YourShelf Press\, which published the author’s own poetry collection All Those Bodies And They’re Moving (2020)\, and Rebecca Lucy Taylor’s SELF ESTEEM (2021). The author also introduced Florence Welch to the Strasbourg dancing plague of 1616\, which inspired her 2022 album Dance Fever. Zaffino holds a PhD on ‘Cutting Shakespeare’\, from the Shakespeare Institute and the Royal Shakespeare Company. In Pop Culchie (Eriu)\, Páraic delves into the oddities and eccentricities of Irish popular culture\, from Daniel O’Donnell and the Fat Frog to national moral panics\, forgotten pop acts\, unusual scandals and the curious history of Housewife of the Year. \nIn conversation with arts journalist Pat Carty\, they uncover the humour\, quirks and contradictions that make Irish culture so distinctive — and ask why we are\, quite simply\, the way we are. \n \nPáraic Kerrigan is an Irish Times bestselling author\, researcher and Assistant Professor at UCD. He was also a star in the smash hit second season of The Traitors Ireland\, where he was selected as a traitor. His expertise in Irish popular culture stems partly from academic study and partly from an unhealthy level of affection for Irish pop music and cult films. He maintains\, without irony\, that Fade Street and Dublin Wives are key national texts worthy of serious scholarly attention. He also believes that Six’s “There a Whole Lot of Loving” is one of the great\, overlooked achievements of Irish musical history. Following several unsuccessful attempts to become a pop star\, he turned to writing books instead. His previous book\, Reeling in the Queers\, was shortlisted for an Irish Book Award in 2024. \nColm O’Regan is an acclaimed Irish author and columnist\, known for his humorous explorations of Irish life and culture. He is the author of eight books\, including the Irish Mammies trilogy\, Bolloxology\, the Ann Devine novels and Climate Worrier. As a stand-up comedian\, MC and event host\, he has performed all over the world. He has written for and performed on TV and radio and has a weekly column for the Irish Examiner. He lives with family in Dublin\, but his heart and language are still in his home of Dripsey in Co. Cork. \nPat Carty is a freelance arts journalist and broadcaster whose work has featured in The Sunday Independent\, The Sunday Times\, The Irish Examiner\, The Irish Independent\, The Irish Times\, The Business Post\, Hot Press\, and Classic Rock Magazine. He’s a regular contributor on RTE Radio One’s Arena\, and on several Newstalk shows including The Hard Shoulder\, Moncrieff\, and Lunchtime Live. He’s turned up on television the odd time too but producers are unanimous in their opinion that his is a face for radio.

SUMMARY:Promiscuous Writing: Jumping Across Forms
DESCRIPTION:Sara Baume\, Gustav Parker Hibbett and Ralf Webb\n\n\nThree writers\, Sara Baume\, Gustav Parker Hibbett\, and Ralf Webb – who write across forms of fiction\, non-fiction\, poetry\, art writing\, and beyond – discuss their writing practices with Tolka\, a Dublin-based literary magazine that publishes ‘formally promiscuous’ non-fiction. These writers will explore how easy or difficult it is to jump between different mediums\, their various approaches to writing poetry\, fiction and non-fiction\, as well as discussing specific pieces they have written for Tolka. The discussion will be followed by the launch of Tolka Issue Twelve\, with short readings from featured contributors. \nPlease note we may be capturing candid imagery at this event for use on our social media and website. \nSara Baume is the author of three novels\, Spill Simmer Falter Wither\, A Line Made by Walking and Seven Steeples\, which was shortlisted for the Goldsmiths Prize and the International Dylan Thomas Prize\, and one book of narrative non-fiction\, handiwork\, which was shortlisted for the Rathbones Folio Prize. She has received the Rooney Prize for Literature\, a Lannan Literary Fellowship\, the E. M Forster Award and in 2023 she was named one of Granta magazine’s ‘Best Young British Novelists.’ Her fifth book\, Opening Night\, was published in July 2026. She is based in West Cork where she works also as a visual artist. \nGustav Parker Hibbett is a Black poet\, essayist\, and MFA dropout. Their debut poetry collection\, High Jump as Icarus Story (Banshee Press\, 2024)\, won the John Pollard Foundation International Poetry Prize and was shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot Prize\, among other honours. They were the 2025 Commissioned Writer for Temple Bar Gallery + Studios\, and they have recently completed a PhD in Literary Practice at Trinity College Dublin. \nRalf Webb is the author of poetry collections Highway Cottage and Rotten Days in Late Summer\, as well as the non-fiction book Strange Relations\, which was shortlisted for the Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year Award. His poems\, essays\, and fiction have appeared widely. She is a regular contributor to Irish and international broadcast media\, has anchored television and radio programmes for Virgin Media and Newstalk\, and has previously written for the Sunday Independent and the Irish Times. \nElaina Ryan is CEO of Children’s Books Ireland\, an all-island charity which aims to inspire and enable children and young people in Ireland to become readers for life. Children’s Books Ireland supports authors and illustrators and informs families\, teachers\, booksellers\, librarians\, publishers and other adults who influence children and young people’s reading. Elaina is co-chair of the European reading promotion network EURead. \nKim A. Snyder is an Academy Award nominee and Peabody Award-winning Director/Producer. Her latest feature documentary\, The Librarians\, premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival\, and has been nominated for a 2026 Primetime Emmy. The Librarians has won 30 festival awards\, was released theatrically in over 200 cities internationally\, and broadcast on PBS/Independent Lens. Her most recent short documentary\, Death by Numbers\, was nominated for a 2025 Academy Award. Snyder’s other acclaimed films include Us Kids (Sundance 2020)\, Lessons from a School Shooting (Best Short Doc Tribeca 2018\, Netflix Original)\, Newtown (Sundance 2016\, Peabody Award\, PBS/Independent Lens). She associate produced the Academy Award-winning short Trevor\, which inspired The Trevor Project\, a leading national nonprofit focused on LGBTQ+ youth suicide prevention. Kim earned a master’s degree in International Affairs from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and resides in New York City. \nAudrey Wilson-Youngblood is an educator with over two decades of experience in K-12 and higher education. Throughout her career as a teacher\, librarian\, and leader\, she’s been an advocate for student writers and readers\, promoting literacy and the free and open exchange of ideas in library spaces.  With experience in both school and academic libraries\,  Audrey is pursuing her PhD in Information Science with the goal of becoming a library educator to prepare and mentor the next generation of librarians. \nRuth Hegarty is Managing Editor of the Royal Irish Academy’s publishing house. She produces beautiful accessible books rooted in scholarship that encourage readers to return to the primary source . Recent award-winning publications include For and against a united Ireland\, Irish food history: a companion and Knowth. DESCRIPTION:Rosaleen McDonagh in conversation with Katherine O’Donnell\n\n\nIn partnership with Poetry Ireland. \nContentious Spaces (Skein Press) is the debut novel from acclaimed author and playwright Rosaleen McDonagh\, exploring the inner lives of Traveller families on a site in Dublin over the course of one crucial week. Threatened with eviction\, it’s not only their homes at stake but also their history and the stories that have shaped them. Rosaleen joins author and academic Katherine O’Donnell in conversation about her unflinching novel\, exploring themes including identity and loyalty\, shame and resilience\, grief and love\, and the power of voices that refuse to be silenced. \nPlease note we may be capturing candid imagery at this event for use on our social media and website. \nRosaleen McDonagh is a writer\, playwright\, performer and a member of Aosdána. Her plays include The Baby Doll Project\, She’s Not Mine\, Rings\, The Prettiest Proud Boy and Mainstream. Her most recent commissions were Walls and Windows\, followed by Backbone for the Abbey Theatre and Context for Pavee Point\, which loosely documents the forty year history of Pavee Point. She is part of the Navigator Series by Fishamble for 2026. She is the author of Unsettled (Skein Press\, 2021) and Contentious Spaces (Skein Press\, 2026). Rosaleen holds a BA\, two MPhils from Trinity College Dublin and a PhD from Northumbria University. She was reappointed a Human Rights Commissioner in June 2025 and is a member of the Arts Council of Ireland. \nKatherine O’Donnell is Professor of the History of Ideas in the School of Philosophy\, University College Dublin. She has published widely on the history of masculinity\, the culture and politics of eighteenth century Ireland and on Ireland’s widespread system of residential institutional abuse and forced family separation. She is a member of Justice for Magdalenes Research whose work was instrumental in securing a state apology and redress scheme for those held in Magdalene Laundries.
