Her book The Maamtrasna Murders: Language\, Life and Death in Nineteenth-Century Ireland (UCD Press\, 2018) was awarded the Michael J. Durkan Prize for Books in Language and Culture and was shortlisted for the Michel Déon Prize. She has published widely in the areas of Irish literary and cultural history. Margaret was Cullman Center Fellow at New York Public Library (2022 –2023) where she researched the library’s holdings of papers relating to writers Padraic and Mary Colum\, housed in the Berg Collection\, and she was Parnell Fellow in Irish Studies at Magdalene College\, Cambridge (2023 –2024). Her new book Mary and Padraic Colum: Lives and the Dream is published by UCD Press. \nÉilís Ní Dhuibhne was born in Dublin. She was awarded a Ph D in Irish Folklore from UCD in 1982\, and is best known as a writer of fiction. Author of over 30 novels\, short stories\, memoir and drama her work her most recent books are Twelve Thousand Days: A Memoir (shortlisted for the Michel Déon Award 2020) and Little Red and Other Stories (Blackstaff 2020)\, Selected Stories (Blackstaff 2023)\, Milseog an tSamhraidh (Clo Iar Chonnacht 2023)\, and Look! It’s a Woman Writer! (Arlen House\, 2021). She has been the recipient of many literary awards\, including the Burns Literature Award\, Stuart Parker Award for Drama\, Bisto Book of the Year Award\, many Oireachtas awards\, and shortlisting for the Orange Prize for Fiction. In autumn 2020 she held the Burns Professorship at Boston College. Niamh Mac Cabe’s Four Night Seas (Lilliput Press) features characters navigating emotional or existential thresholds – grieving\, seeking meaning or reconciling with the past. John O’Donnell’s Mr Hoo and Other Stories (Doire Press) features compelling stories of schemers and survivors\, of almost-winners and not-quite losers. The authors will join writer and critic Niall MacMonagle to discuss their writing process\, and the power of the short story to explore universal themes from loneliness and desire\, to memory\, loss and human connection. \nPlease note we may be capturing candid imagery at this event for use on our social media and website. \nNiamh Mac Cabe is an award-winning writer of fiction\, nonfiction\, poetry\, plays\, and hybrid prose. She is also a visual artist\, an editor\, and a lecturer on the Honours Degree in Writing & Literature\, the Honours Degree in Performing Arts\, and the Masters in Creative Practice at ATU Sligo. Dublin-born\, she worked overseas for several years in the Animated Film industry before ‘settling’ in northwestern Ireland.   \nNiall MacMonagle\, writer and critic\, has edited several anthologies\, including the Lifeline series\, the Poetry Now textbooks\, Windharp\, Poems of Ireland since 1916 and Paul Durcan 80 at 80. He writes a weekly art column for the Sunday Independent and in 2017 was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by UCD for Services to Literature. \nJohn O’Donnell has won the Irish National Poetry Prize\, the New Irish Writing Awards for Poetry and Fiction\, and in 2023 the RTE Francis McManus Short Story Award for his story ‘Mr Hoo’. He has published five poetry collections. His collection of short stories Almost the Same Blue (Doire Press) was nominated as one of the Debut Books of the Year in the Irish Times and was longlisted for the Edge Hill Short Story Prize. Rainbow Baby\, a play for radio\, was broadcast on RTE’s Drama On One and won a prize at the New York Festivals Radio Awards. A documentary he co-produced about the Fastnet Yacht Race disaster of 1979\, Back To The Rock\, was broadcast on RTE Radio’s The Doc On One. His debut novel\, Second Skin\, was one of the winners of the Irish Writers Centre Novel Fair 2024. Over the past 25 years she has acted in many landmark cases internationally\, in the UK and Europe\, including representing bereaved families of the Hillsborough Disaster and the 7/7 London Bombings\, and in test cases which have changed laws on children’s rights\, for survivors of abuse\, and on access to abortion in Northern Ireland. Internationally\, Caoilfhionn’s work for wrongfully imprisoned people has seen her take on governments around the world\, and she has secured the freedom of over 85 wrongly imprisoned journalists\, bloggers\, cartoonists\, musicians\, businesspeople and activists. She is the world’s leading expert on accountability for deaths of journalists and regularly acts for bereaved families of journalists killed for their work. Caoilfhionn was appointed a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 2017 for her “outstanding contribution to the protection of human rights\,” for devising a mass advertising campaign to highlight positive human rights stories. She is supported by the Arts Council of Ireland and is represented by Matthew Turner at Rogers\, Coleridge; White Agency. \nRory Gleeson is a novelist and scriptwriter. His debut novel Rockadoon Shore was published by John Murray Press. His essays and short stories have been published in Granta\, The Dublin Review\, The London Magazine and The Stinging Fly. He was shortlisted for the BBC National Short Story Award and his work has been performed on RTE Radio 1\, Sky Arts\, BBC Radio 4\, and at Symphony Space in New York. \nKevin Power is the author of two novels\, Bad Day in Blackrock (2008) and White City (2021)\, and a collection of essays\, The Written World (2022). He is also a critic who writes for various publications\, including The New York Review of Books\, The Guardian\, The New Statesman\, and The Irish Times. He is Associate Professor of Literary Practice in the School of English\, Trinity College Dublin. \nAingeala Flannery is deputy publisher of The Dublin Review and producer of The Dublin Review Podcast. She is a writer\, broadcast journalist and teacher. He is the author of a short story collection and several volumes of poetry and prose. His two novels A dögeltakarító (The Carcass Remover\, 2015) and A rózsákról (About the Roses\, 2021) were highly acclaimed in Hungary. They have been translated into German also. The Carcass Remover is the winner of the Miklós Mészöly Prize\, the Tibor Déry Prize and the Milán Füst Prize. \nOwen Good is a Northern Irish translator living in Budapest\, where he is co-editor of Hungarian Literature Online. Winner of the Tibor Déry Prize in 2025 for his devotion to the Hungarian language and literature\, his publications include Krisztina Tóth’s Pixel (named runner up for EBRD Literature Prize)\, Zsolt Láng’s The Birth of Emma K. She holds a BA (Hons) in Illustration from Ulster University. Her practice explores Ireland’s indigenous ecosystems\, rooted in sustainable methodologies and material research. Her art celebrates the natural world. \nSarah Little is a writer and artist from West Fermanagh. She spent her childhood and teens wrapped up in reading and telling stories\, and there discovered her dream of becoming an author. has spent the past six years developing her young adult romance novel\, with a speculative twist exploring themes of identity\, art\, and reality. \nIlona Lo Iacono was born in Australia\, and after moving back and forth across the world\, she now lives in North County Dublin with her family. Lo Iacano enjoys writing middle grade fiction\, and uses a humorous approach to address her lived experiences\, including chronic and serious illnesses\, disability\, neurodivergence and immigrant life. \nCzacarri Muli is an illustrator\, designer and writer from Drogheda and is in his final year of Illustration at the National College of Art and Design\, Dublin. A former newspaper journalist and glossy magazine editor\, she made the transition to novelist in 2023 after seventeen years writing for media outlets in Ireland and the UK. Vicki also hosts You Had Me At Hello\, a podcast where she interviews celebrities about their favourite romantic comedies. She lives in Stoneybatter\, Dublin\, with her husband Joe and their elderly terrier\, Jacko. \nAoife Barry is a writer\, freelance arts journalist and weekly columnist for the Sunday Times. Her 2023 book on social media\, Social Capital (HarperCollins Ireland) was nominated for an Irish Book Award. She has had bylines across various publications including the Irish Times\, the Irish Independent\, Tatler\, The Journal and Irish Examiner. She features regularly on RTÉ Radio One and Today FM and her essays and fiction have been published by ROPES journal and Banshee\, and broadcast on Sunday Miscellany. Among his recently published titles are Irish and Ecology: An Ghaeilge agus an Éiceolaíocht (FÁS\, 2019) and Eco-Travel: Journeying in the Age of the Anthropocene (Cambridge University Press\, 2022). He is a Member of the Royal Irish Academy\, a Member of the Academia Europaea\, an Officier in the Ordre des Palmes Académiques and a Fellow of Trinity College Dublin.  \nVice Admiral Mark Mellett was the first naval officer in the history of the Irish State to serve as Chief of Staff of the Irish Defence Forces\, having previously served as Chief of Navy\, serving in this role until 2001. He holds a PhD in Political Science from NUI Galway\, is a graduate of the distinguished United States Naval War College (where he was top graduate from the 32 attending countries)\, the top graduate of the Royal Naval College\, Greenwich and was recently appointed Adjunct Professor of Law at UCC. \nLorna Siggins is a print and radio journalist\, specialising in marine issues. She is a former Irish Times journalist\, and currently works for RTÉ Radio 1 Countrywide\, The Sunday and Irish Independent and the marine press. She is head of the environmental group Coastwatch\, partner in 2 EU horizon research projects more4nature and ECOTWIN. Karin has a history of initiating projects and actions to inform and strengthen public participation in environmental protection\, monitoring and management\, especially in the coastal zone. That includes co-design of the European Blue Flag for beaches\, then piloting and running the scheme in Ireland for 5 years. The Coastwatch survey\, a volunteer eco-audit of the shore is closest to her citizen science heart. She co-designed it with Frank Mc Donald of the Irish Times and extended it to 23 countries\, enticing citizens to discover and report on their shore\, gather valuable data to share and empower to avoid or indeed challenge environmental harm. He joins Mary Robinson\, a globally recognised voice on the climate crisis\, to discuss his latest book\, Setting the Land Free: Visions of a Rewilded Ireland (Hachette Ireland). With the rewilding movement in Ireland gathering stature and impact\, Eoghan took to the high roads and by-roads to meet with those at the forefront of change\, from those involved in bog ecosystem restoration\, to native species reintroduction\, to rewilding at sea\, forest rewilding\, and much more. \nWhile this event is free\, by making one of your tickets a ‘Supporter’s Ticket‘ you will be making a valuable contribution towards keeping future events accessible and towards the sustainable growth of Dublin Book Festival. \nPlease note we may be capturing candid imagery at this event for use on our social media and website. \nEoghan Daltun is a sculpture conservator\, a farmer\, an author and\, above all\, a rewilder. Reared in Dublin\, he has travelled widely\, as well as living abroad in London\, Paris and Prague. He spent seven years studying sculpture in Carrara\, Tuscany. In 2009\, he sold the cottage in Kilmainham he had rebuilt mostly single-handed from a ruin – dating back to at least the 1750s – using the original stone. The proceeds went to buy a long-abandoned 73-acre farm overlooking the Atlantic near Eyeries on the Beara Peninsula\, West Cork. Much of the land was covered in wild native forest which\, although very beautiful\, was ecologically wrecked by severe overgrazing and invasion by a host of alien plant species. Over the years since\, Eoghan has brought life in all its explosive vibrancy back to the land\, with new temperate rainforest spontaneously forming where previously there was only barren grass. Restoring such an incredibly rich ecosystem has taken him on a fantastic voyage of discovery\, which he charted in his memoir An Irish Atlantic Rainforest: A Personal Journey into the Magic of Rewilding\, which won an An Post Irish Book Award in 2022. Rewilding most of the land\, and High Nature Value farming the rest\, has given him plenty of time to reflect deeply on the ecological crisis unfolding at terrifying speed all around us\, and its solutions. Eoghan followed this up in 2024 with a stunning full-colour illustrated book\, The Magic of an Irish Rainforest: A Visual Journey\, in which he travelled the length and breadth of Ireland photographing areas of temperate rainforest\, in a bid to illustrate their beauty and immense ecological value\, and to document\, in almost all cases\, their state of decline. Eoghan lives on the farm with his two sons\, Liam and Seánie\, their collie dog\, Charlie\, and five Dexter cows: Maggie\, Gertrude\, Amber\, Nelly and Minnie. Setting the Land Free: Visions of a Rewilded Ireland is his third book. \nMary Robinson is a co-founder of Project Dandelion\, which is a women-led global campaign for climate justice\, Adjunct Professor for Climate Justice at Trinity College Dublin\, and a member of The Elders. She served as President of Ireland from 1990-1997 and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 1997-2002. She is a member of the Club of Madrid and the recipient of numerous honours and awards including the Presidential Medal of Freedom from the President of the United States Barack Obama. Between 2013 and 2016\, Mary served as the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy in three roles; first for the Great Lakes region of Africa\, then on Climate Change leading up to the Paris Agreement and in 2016 as his Special Envoy on El Niño and Climate. He is a haiku poet\, and his work has appeared in a wide range of publications\, including Autumn Moon Journal\, Comhar\, First Frost\, hedgerow: a journal of small poems\, The Irish Times\, Poetry Ireland Review\, Presence\, seashores\, Tiny Words\, and Wales Haiku Journal. He is the author of twelve acclaimed novels including The Commitments\, The Snapper\, The Van and Smile\, two collections of short stories\, and Rory & Ita\, a memoir about his parents. He won the Booker Prize in 1993 for Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha.  \nAnne Enright is the author of eight novels\, two books of short stories and three selections of essays\, most recently Attention. First Laureate for Irish Fiction\, winner of the Man Booker Prize her most recent honours include The Seamus Heaney Award for Arts and Letters (2025) and The Windham Campbell Prize (2025). Enright is Professor of Fiction at University College Dublin. \nMartin Doyle is Books Editor of The Irish Times and a former Editor of The Irish Post. He is the author of Dirty Linen: The Troubles in My Home Place (Merrion Press\, 2023)\, which was shortlisted for Irish Nonfiction Book of the Year\, and A Hosting: Interviews with Irish Writers 1991-2026 (Lilliput Press\, 2026). He is founder of the website Climatechange.ie and has a long-running blog at ThinkOrSwim.ie. He regularly appears on national media outlets. He has been a weekly environmental columnist on The Last Word on Today FM for the last five years and contributes to the Irish Examiner\, Business Post\, Irish Times\, TheJournal.ie\, and DeSmog UK. His first book\, The Lie of the Land: A game plan for Ireland in the climate crisis\, was published by Penguin in 2025. The book was Shortlisted for non-fiction Book of the Year in the Irish Book Awards 2025. He is also co-author of the Routledge Handbook of Environmental Journalism (2020). \nMary Robinson is a co-founder of Project Dandelion\, which is a women-led global campaign for climate justice\, Adjunct Professor for Climate Justice at Trinity College Dublin\, and a member of The Elders. She served as President of Ireland from 1990-1997 and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 1997-2002. She is a member of the Club of Madrid and the recipient of numerous honours and awards including the Presidential Medal of Freedom from the President of the United States Barack Obama. Between 2013 and 2016\, Mary served as the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy in three roles; first for the Great Lakes region of Africa\, then on Climate Change leading up to the Paris Agreement and in 2016 as his Special Envoy on El Niño and Climate. Her Foundation\, the Mary Robinson Foundation – Climate Justice\, established in 2010\, came to a planned end in April 2019. \nSadhbh O’Neill has over thirty years working in environmental advocacy\, policy research and engagement. With a background in academic research and teaching in environmental politics\, climate change policy and climate law\, she has combined roles in advocacy\, litigation and policy research for universities and environmental organisations over the years. For the past four years she has taught climate\, environment and energy law modules at TU Dublin. Her “claim to fame” is that she was (at the time) the youngest elected member of Dublin City Council\, having been elected in absentia in 1991 while on a J1 student visa. Building upon her long-standing work in advocacy and communications\, Sadhbh was also the a candidate for the Waterford constituency in the last General Election and stood in the TCD Seanad election in 2025. She is currently the project manager for a PEACEPLUS cross-border project of the Irish Environmental Network and the Northern Ireland Environment Link\, alongside being a regular contributor to the Irish Times Opinion page on climate and environmental topics. \nPaddy Woodworth is an author\, journalist\, lecturer and tour guide. He contributes regularly to The Irish Times and presents The Naturalist’s Bookshelf series on RTE lyric fm’s Culture File\, on which he talks about nature books he loves. He has published two acclaimed books on the Basque Country. In 2013\, he published a study of ecological restoration projects worldwide\, and in Ireland\, Our Once and Future Planet: Restoring the World in the Climate Change Century (U of Chicago Press). A BioScience reviewer wrote: “Highly readable. This book will bring the concept and application of ecological restoration to a broader audience and will help inspire a new generation of restoration practitioners and researchers”. He is a Research Associate at Missouri Botanical Garden\, and an Adjunct Senior Lecturer at University College Dublin.
