About the National Concert Hall Gamelan Orchestra of Ireland

The National Concert Hall Gamelan Orchestra was established by Dr. Peter Moran in 2014 when he arranged for a complete set of gamelan instruments to be presented to the Irish people as a gift from His Royal Highness Sultan Hamengkubuwono X of Yogyakarta, Java.

The ensemble’s first official concert was to perform before the sultan and members of the Yogyakarta royal family, and diplomatic delegates from around the world, for the gamelan’s formal “naming ceremony”, which was held in the NCH in 2014.

Since then, the ensemble has performed at festivals in Ireland and Indonesia, including the Electric Picnic, Kaleidoscope, Down with Jazz, Another Love Story, Beyond the Pale, the Sundays@Noon Concert Series, the Bray Jazz Festival, and the Yogyakarta International Performing Arts Festival in Java. In 2018, their outdoor arena performance at the International Gamelan Festival in Java received highly positive reviews in the national culture magazine, Tempo, and BBC Indonesia.

In 2024, the NCH Gamelan Orchestra celebrated its 10th Anniversary with the launch of their debut album, Kyai Jati Roso. This is the name that the sultan bestowed on the instruments in the naming ceremony, which translates as “The Honorable Gamelan of Pure Consciousness”. The launch of this unique album gained national and international media attention, from L.A.’s KPFK Radio to Indonesia’s TVOne News.

This was quickly followed by the orchestra’s second album, Confluence, which features six original works by Irish composers for gamelan and uilleann pipes and cello. This programme was premiered at the New Music Dublin Festival 2025, and is available now on Farpoint Recordings.

The NCH Gamelan can be found on Facebook, Instagram and on YouTube, where their videos have received nearly 100,000 views.
