Christchurch Cathedral: A Journey Through Time

Nestled in the heart of Dublin, Christchurch Cathedral stands as a testament to the city's rich and tumultuous history. Founded in 1030, it has witnessed countless moments in Ireland's past, from Viking settlements to religious reforms, and even periods of disrepair and revival.

The Dark Days

By the 17th century, Christchurch Cathedral had fallen into a state of neglect. In the late 1800s, it faced the looming threat of collapse. Enter George Roe, a local distillery owner from Roe & Co, who became a symbol of hope for the cathedral. Through his dedication and financial backing, significant restorations were executed, preserving the structure and allowing it to regain its former glory.

Reflecting on its complex past, the area surrounding the cathedral was also thought to have housed a brewery and possibly a brothel during the times of Darkey Kelly, a notorious figure in Dublin's history. Darkey Kelly was said to have operated a bar where rumors swirled about the seedy underbelly of Dublin life during her time.
