To get to Howth from Dublin city centre, hop on the DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit) train from Connolly Station or Tara Street. The journey will take approximately 30 minutes, with stunning coastal views along the way. Once you arrive in Howth, prepare for a day full of adventure, breathtaking sights, and, of course, delicious food.
Start by taking the famous Cliff Walk. This scenic 6-kilometre trail is perfect for both seasoned hikers and casual walkers. It offers stunning views of the sea and Dublin Bay, and trust me, you’ll want to work up an appetite! Along the way, make sure to stop at the renowned fish and chips shop on the pier. Enjoy your meal with the salty breeze in your hair while keeping an eye on the local seagulls plotting to snatch your food—you have been warned!
For a post-hike drink and bite, check out the best bars in Howth like The Abbey Tavern, known for its warm atmosphere and hearty Irish fare, or The Oar House, which offers fresh local seafood and a fantastic selection of craft beers. Both spots provide a cozy ambiance to unwind after a day of exploring.
Don’t skip out on Deer Park, located near the golf course. The park features a lovely mix of greenery and walking paths, all while giving you access to spectacular views from the golf course’s elevated areas. Just remember to keep hold of your fish and chips—those seagulls have a keen sense for tasty snacks and may swoop down when you least expect it!
The best times to visit Howth are generally from April to September when the weather is pleasant, but beware, weekends can get quite crowded with locals and tourists alike vying for their spot on the trails. If you want a quieter experience, try visiting mid-week.
Throughout the year, Howth hosts various festivals, such as the Howth Seafood Festival in September and the Howth Castle Market during the summer months, showcasing local food, crafts, and live music. Be sure to check the schedules, as they can change yearly. The Howth Roots & Blues festival is a particular favourite of ours and is usually in early August.
So pack your walking shoes, grab your camera, and make your way to Howth—just don’t forget to mind your fish!
