Trinity College
A visit to our fair city wouldn’t be complete without a stroll through the grounds of our most famous university, Trinity College.
Trinity College Dublin holds the title of Ireland’s oldest university, established back in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I. Nestled right in the city centre, it’s a place steeped in history. Many of Ireland’s literary giants walked these very paths, including Oscar Wilde, Jonathan Swift, and Samuel Beckett.
The university is known worldwide for its high academic standards and is consistently ranked as the best in Ireland. It’s a hub for cutting edge research and learning.
But you’re here as a visitor, so let’s talk about what you can see! The absolute must do is the Old Library to see the Book of Kells. This is a breathtakingly beautiful ancient manuscript, dating back over a thousand years. The exhibition is fascinating, but the real showstopper is the Long Room. This is the library’s main chamber, a colossal and majestic hall lined with over 200,000 of the library’s oldest books. It is a truly unforgettable sight.
A little local advice: the queues for the Book of Kells exhibition can get very long, especially during the summer months. I highly recommend booking your tickets online in advance to secure your spot.
After your tour, take some time to simply wander. The campus is a peaceful oasis in the middle of the city, with beautiful green squares and historic buildings. Keep an eye out for students playing cricket on the lawn in front of the Campanile, the iconic bell tower.
Trinity is also a living part of Dublin’s cultural scene, with theatres, art galleries, and science galleries that are often open to the public. It’s a place where history and modern life meet.
So, please, explore and enjoy this incredible institution. It’s a cornerstone of Irish history and culture, and we are very proud to share it with you
