New Year’s Eve in Dublin 2026: Where to Celebrate

Ha'penny Bridge lit up at night over the River Liffey, the heart of New Year's Eve in Dublin

Quick answer: For New Year’s Eve in Dublin in 2026, the big ticket is the NYF Dublin Countdown Concert at Dublin Castle, headlined by Aaron Rowe, with an earlier family-friendly Countdown Concert Matinee in the afternoon. Before or after, the city’s pubs do the rest. Getting home is easier than you’d think: last year there were Nitelink buses, Night Luas trams and extra late DARTs until about 3am.

Ah, Dublin at New Year! Sure, there’s no better city to see out the old year with a pint in one hand and a stranger’s arm around your shoulder for “Auld Lang Syne”. Here’s everything you need for 31 December 2026, from the festival programme and the countdown to pubs, dinner, the trip home and what to do with yourself on New Year’s Day.

NYF Dublin 2026: The Official New Year’s Festival

New Year’s Festival Dublin (NYF Dublin) is the city’s official celebration, developed by Fáilte Ireland with the Office of Public Works. It’s confirmed for 30 December 2026 to 1 January 2027 (subject to licence), with events at Dublin Castle, Meeting House Square in Temple Bar and around the city centre. The organisers say more programme details and ticket information will follow over the coming months, so treat the list below as the plan so far.

30 December: Echoes of Ireland and the Music Trail

  • Echoes of Ireland Concerts: free, unticketed Irish music at Dublin Castle from 3.30pm to 8pm.
  • NYF Dublin Music Trail: free gigs from up-and-coming Irish acts in venues across the city centre, from 5pm. Expect everything from trad to rock, indie and punk.

31 December: The Two Countdown Concerts

  • Countdown Concert Matinee (4pm–6.30pm, Dublin Castle): The Academic, with THEATRE, KK Lewis and DJ Shelly Gray, plus an early “midnight moment” countdown that suits all ages. Tickets are €9.90, or €24.90 for a family of two adults and two children. A presale opens at 10am on Monday 12 October and general sale at 10am on Wednesday 14 October. Under-16s must be with an adult.
  • Countdown Concert (8pm–12.30am, Dublin Castle): Aaron Rowe headlines, with The Academic, THEATRE, KK Lewis and DJ Shelly Gray. Early bird tickets are €44.90 and on sale now through Ticketmaster. It’s strictly over-18s.

Ticketmaster adds a 12.5% service charge per ticket (up to €10.50). The matinee and the evening show are separate events, so you can’t stay on from one to the other, and there’s no re-entry once you leave. Umbrellas aren’t allowed, so bring a proper rain jacket. Heads up: the Dublin Castle grounds are closed to ordinary visitors for the rest of 2026, so a festival ticket is your way in.

1 January: Procession and Free Concerts

  • ‘Ignite and Excite’ Procession: marching bands, street performers and music through the city centre from 4.30pm. It’s free.
  • New Year’s Day Concerts: free events at Dublin Castle and trad musicians at Meeting House Square. No ticket needed; times are still to be confirmed.

Where to Watch the Countdown on New Year’s Eve in Dublin

Dublin doesn’t do one giant midnight firework over the Liffey, so plan where you want to be when the clock strikes.

  • Inside Dublin Castle: the Countdown Concert is the official midnight moment, with pyrotechnics during the show. Last year it was also broadcast live on RTÉ’s Late Late Show. It sold out in 2025, so don’t leave it late.
  • The early bird option: the Matinee’s countdown is the one for families. In 2025 it came at 6.30pm.
  • Fireworks over Dublin Bay: in 2025 the festival put on free fireworks at Howth Harbour and Dún Laoghaire Harbour at 7pm, and Irish Rail ran extra DARTs for them. They aren’t on the 2026 schedule yet, though the festival FAQ still mentions them, so keep an eye on nyfdublin.com. Howth is about 30 minutes from the city centre by DART, and Dún Laoghaire about 20.
  • A pub: honestly, where most Dubliners will be. More on that below.

The Best Pubs and Areas for New Year’s Eve

Temple Bar

Temple Bar is the busiest, loudest and priciest spot on the night, and it’s right beside Dublin Castle and Meeting House Square. It’s great for atmosphere. Arrive early or you may not get in anywhere.

The Brazen Head

Ireland’s oldest pub, on Bridge Street, says it dates from 1198. It has live music seven nights a week from 9pm and serves food until 9pm, which makes it a handy dinner-then-session spot. Expect a crowd.

Let Someone Else Pick the Pubs

If you’d rather not fight for a stool, a guided night out takes the guesswork away. The Musical Pub Crawl is two and a half hours of trad music and Irish dancing in two well-known pubs. The Yellow Umbrella traditional pub tour takes you to pubs on the northside, away from the tourist crowds, with tasters of craft beer, whiskey and gin. Check that your date is running before you book, as schedules around New Year can change.

Warm Up with a Tour

Want to start early? A late afternoon at the Guinness Storehouse or the Irish Whiskey Museum’s Irish Coffee Masterclass sets you up nicely. Check holiday opening hours before you go.

New Year’s Eve Dinners

Lots of Dublin restaurants serve a set menu on 31 December, often with two sittings: an early one and a late one that runs towards midnight. A few tips:

  • Book early. The good tables go weeks in advance, especially anywhere within walking distance of Dublin Castle or Temple Bar.
  • Pick the early sitting if you have concert tickets. Doors for the Countdown Concert opened at 8pm last year.
  • Stay central. Dinner near your pub or venue saves you trying to cross the city on the busiest night of the year.
  • Check deposits and cancellation rules. Many places ask for a deposit on New Year’s Eve.

Getting Home: Public Transport on New Year’s Eve

The 2026 timetables haven’t been published yet. Here’s what ran on New Year’s Eve 2025, which gives you a good idea of what to expect. Check Transport for Ireland nearer the time.

  • Dublin Bus: a Saturday timetable with extra peak trips, plus a full Nitelink service and all 24-hour routes through the night.
  • Luas: Saturday hours plus Night Luas, running until about 3am on the Red Line and 3.30am on the Green Line.
  • DART and commuter trains: extra trains after midnight, including Pearse to Howth at 1.30am and 2.30am, Connolly to Greystones at 1.35am and 2.35am, Pearse to Dundalk (via Malahide) at 1.40am and 2.40am, Pearse to Maynooth at 1.20am and 3.05am, and Pearse to Kildare at 12.55am and 2.58am.
  • Taxis: Dublin has over 17,300 taxi drivers, but expect long queues just after midnight. Book ahead or walk a few streets away from the crowds.

There’s no parking at the festival venues, so leave the car at home. If you’re arriving on the day, see our guide to getting to and from Dublin Airport.

New Year’s Day in Dublin

Take a Bracing Sea Swim

Nothing clears the head like the Irish Sea. People have been swimming at the Forty Foot in Sandycove for about 250 years, and the winter dips at Christmas and New Year are a local tradition. There are no lifeguards, so only go in if you’re a confident swimmer, never swim alone, and take care on the slippy steps. If you’d rather not get in, watching from the rocks with a hot drink is just as much fun.

Go for a Walk

Take the DART out to Howth for a coastal walk or along the seafront to Dún Laoghaire. Back in town, catch the free procession at 4.30pm and the concerts at Dublin Castle and Meeting House Square.

Public Transport on New Year’s Day

Last year, buses and DART ran a Sunday service on 1 January, with no Nitelink. Normal timetables came back on 2 January.

Plan a Day Trip

If you’re staying into the new year, a day out of the city is the perfect reset. Our guide to the most popular day tours from Dublin covers the best ones, or go straight for the Kilkenny, Wicklow Mountains and Glendalough day tour. Check departure dates over the holidays.
